President Obama signed the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act on June 22, 2009. The act grants control of the tobacco industry to the FDA. Under the new law, the FDA can limit the amount of nicotine in cigarettes and tobacco companies will be prevented from using misleading labels like "light" and "low tar." One Year after State Cigarette Tax Increase, Smoking at Lowest Rate Ever Recorded. The New York State Department of Health announced on June 4, 2009 that the adult smoking rate has fallen to 16.7%. Read the press release here
