Student Positions are available with the University of Rochester Cancer Center’s Smoking Research Program (available for Summer, Fall, and Spring).
Research Experience Opportunities are available in:
- GRATCC - The Greater Rochester Area Tobacco Cessation Center is a State-funded project to train physicians and other clinicians in how to intervene with their patients who smoke. It also provides stop-smoking counseling sessions to more than 200 referred patients per year. Students working in "GRATCC" help prepare materials for doctors' offices, collect data from surveys, provide data management, and make telephone calls to smokers to see how they are doing. A car is desired, but not a requirement (if driving to doctors' offices - student is reimbursed for mileage). An awesome opportunity to learn how to implement a large project for physicians and smokers in a 5-county area.
- Cardiovascular Health - Assist with web-design, distance learning, surveys, and evaluation techniques. Many projects are underway in the Rochester area for students to be involved with as research assistants. Great for pre-med students, technology-oriented students, and other students interested in health and education.
Dr. Ossip-Klein, Dr. McIntosh, and their teams are nationally known for development of effective telephone "Quit Lines", website interventions, and other self-help materials to assist smokers quit on their own.
Internship Tasks
Based on a person's talent and interest, there are enless possibilities of what this position can teach Independent Study Students and Interns. Here's a partial list of Tasks: Data entry, data management, and data analysis; Telephone Follow-up Interviews with Research Subjects; Assist with managing a smokers' hotline; Learn and use computerized data management and statistical analysis packages; Create PowerPoint Presentations for conferences and other presentations; Participate in weekly research meetings and learn about all phases of ongoing behavioral research projects; Learn about addiction and behavioral change; Work on your own research project.
Requirements
Course participaton (HLS_396, unless otherwise negotiated) for this project requires a commitment of 9 hours per week for 4 credits per semester (a 2-semester commitment is often required, but such semesters do not necessarily have to be taken consecutively).

Directions
The Smoking Research Program, within the Division of Social and Behavioral Medicine is now located at the River Road Annex, ground floor, room G100. The Annex is available on the UR student bus route, and is approximately 1/2 mile south of the Medical Center.
