Project Title: Breastfeeding Practices and Attitudes Among Rochester City Mothers
Description: A pediatrician and a midwife at the Anthony Jordan Health Center each said that they thought about 25% of new mothers from their facility (minority/low SES/less educated women) initiated breastfeeding, and that far fewer continued breastfeeding. In order to help improve breastfeeding rates among this population, this project sought out mothers and found out: 1-What are their attitudes/thoughts surrounding breastfeeding. 2-What factors are most important in their decision to breast or bottlefeed and 3-What do they think would promote breastfeeding in their community. It includes a questionnaire.

Description: This project was based at the Sojourner House, an agency which provides transitional housing to high-risk women. An evaluation component was instituted to an existing program, to assess changes in participants’ knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and feelings of self-efficacy. Key partners included AIDS Rochester, AHA, ACS, and Planned Parenthood.

Description: Partnerships with the OME, School 7, the Rochester Police Department, the Pirate Toy Fund, and Finger Lakes Restorative Justice, an anti-violence campaign was created and implemented at School 7. Additionally, the Rochester Medical Students Against Violence group was re-started to carry on this message in the future.

Jordan Health Center (AJHC), serving the northeast central quadrant of Rochester, NY, has developed individualized strategies to supplement diabetes care for its unique patient population. By coordinating area diabetes resources and community agencies, the author sought to enhance existing AJHC efforts with sustainable partnerships to ensure lasting benefits for its patients.

Project Title: Strong Stories: HIV/AIDS in Rochester, An African-American Woman's Perspective
Description: We intended to develop a 30min segment for 'Strong Stories', titled ‘HIV/AIDS in Rochester: An African American Woman’s Perspective.’ The show will interview three African American women living with HIV in the Rochester community. The interview questions will focus on support, stigma, and HIV prevention strategies. Once completed, the video will be incorporated into HIV/AIDS outreach programs run by the Student National Medical Association.

Project Title: HIV/AIDS in Rochester: An African American and Latino Women's Perspective
Description:

In order to reach out to young women in Rochester, a documentary was produced titled: HIV/ AIDS in Rochester: An African American and Latino Women’s Perspective. The documentary will be about the lives of three women of color in Rochester, who have been infected with HIV. The women will share their life experiences pertaining to HIV/AIDS with regard to how it affects them, their families and their community’s.

Description: For this project, an evaluation of this program was performed with both quantitative and qualitative data collection. Based on the results, several improvements were made to the current program and recommendations for possible future expansion of smoking cessation services were developed.

Project Title: Food, Fitness & Fun
Description: The aim of this project is to educate children in fourth-sixth grade about diet and exercise and hopefully to have fun while battling pediatric obesity. With the help of a graphic designer in the community, computerized educational modules were created on pediatric obesity that can be implemented into any health class around the country, provided that there are computers available.

Project Title: Food Reaching Everyone Spreading Health (FRESH)
Description: A survey of 41/52 convenient stores in southwestern Rochester, NY showed that 95% did not offer fresh fruit and 85% did not offer fresh vegetables. Montgomery Neighborhood Center, SouthWest Area Neighborhood, Foodlink, and the University of Rochester partnered to create a produce stand that would deliver fresh fruits and vegetables to this area.

Project Title: The Hair Salon Project: Bringing a Lay Health Education Model to Tonja's Personal Touch Salon
Description: This project aimed to introduce a lay health education model into a salon serving African American women in the Southwedge neighborhood of Rochester. This program was tested in a focus group and was well received by community members.

Project Title: Evaluation of the Student Volunteer Experience at UR Well Student Outreach
Description: The purpose of this project was to design and implement an evaluation of the student volunteer experience at UR Well. The evaluation was designed with the input of the UR Well Steering Committee and Adrienne Morgan. Key Informant Interviews were completed and a Questionnaire was started.

Project Title: Creating an Electronic Signout System for UR Well and Analysis of the Signout Information
Description: To improve care at UR Well Student Outreach, a database was created to store information about patients’ visits. One year of data was converted and analyzed, with summary of results presented. Once the database is fully implemented, it can sustainably replace the paper sign-out procedure.

Description: The Reach Out and Read (ROR) program helps encourage parents to foster their child’s love for reading by providing them with the tools (books, educational resources, training) to do so in the hopes that a strong foundation in reading skills will help expand their minds and horizons and result in improved scholastic performance and with better education.
