Description: This project focuses on a web-assisted tobacco counseling resource. A collaboration between smoking cessation researchers at two universities, the program allows a current smoker to meet privately with a healthcare provider in an online chat room.

Empowering Women through the Sojourner House Health Lifestyles Project

Description: This project was based at the Sojourner House, an agency which provides transitional housing to high-risk women. An evaluation component was instituted to an existing program, to assess changes in participants’ knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and feelings of self-efficacy. Key partners included AIDS Rochester, AHA, ACS, and Planned Parenthood.

Staged Based Behavioral Counseling

Description: Staged Based Counseling (SBC) is a behavioral modification modality targeting clients at all levels of readiness to change. This project created SBC as an elective for medical students at the University of Rochester. The goal is to increase trained individuals in this method, and ultimately address the needs of the Rochester Community.

Childhood Lead Poisoning Education

Description: A DVD on lead education was shown to clients at Jordan Health Center, ABC, Healthy Start, and the BEST Program and distributed to other community partners. By targeting communities with the greatest burden of childhood lead poisoning, an important difference was made to families that need the most intervention.

Professional Crisis: The Need for Activism Training in Medical School Education

Description: A cross sectional study design will be utilized to survey second and fourth year medical students will to assess the participants’ views on physicians’ role in advocacy and health policy change, the prevalence of participants’ self reported interest and competence level in doing advocacy work, and their exposure to advocacy training in undergraduate medical education.

Description: A Healthy Heart Booth was created for the open houses at five Rochester City elementary schools. The open houses allowed the medical students to reach both elementary school children and their parents.

Project Title: Organization of Medical Students in a Disaster: An Untapped Resource in Emergency Preparedness
Description: Medical students attending the School of Medicine represent a skilled, willing resource to aid in a disaster, but are not included in the emergency plan of the affiliated hospital, Strong Memorial. This project aimed to pull together existing resources and leaders within the emergency preparedness plan to propose a system for student participation.

Project Title: The Anthony L. Jordan Diabetes Collaborative: Partnerships for a Sustainable Future
Description: The Anthony L. Jordan Health Center (AJHC), serving the northeast central quadrant of Rochester, NY, has developed individualized strategies to supplement diabetes care for its unique patient population. By coordinating area diabetes resources and community agencies, the author sought to enhance existing AJHC efforts with sustainable partnerships to ensure lasting benefits for its patients.

Project Title: Hoops for Health
Description: The Hoops for Health after school program was created to target those children at greatest risk. With the help of coordinators at Quad A, a partnership was created with students at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and School 34 staff, ultimately leading to the development of the Hoops for Health program in 2003.

Project Title: UR Well Smoking Cessation Program Evaluation
Description: For this project, an evaluation of this program was performed with both quantitative and qualitative data collection. Based on the results, several improvements were made to the current program and recommendations for possible future expansion of smoking cessation services were developed.

Project Title: Food Reaching Everyone Spreading Health (FRESH)
Description: A survey of 41/52 convenient stores in southwestern Rochester, NY showed that 95% did not offer fresh fruit and 85% did not offer fresh vegetables. Montgomery Neighborhood Center, SouthWest Area Neighborhood, Foodlink, and the University of Rochester partnered to create a produce stand that would deliver fresh fruits and vegetables to this area.

Project Title: Evaluation of the Student Volunteer Experience at UR Well Student Outreach
Description: The purpose of this project was to design and implement an evaluation of the student volunteer experience at UR Well. The evaluation was designed with the input of the UR Well Steering Committee and Adrienne Morgan. Key Informant Interviews were completed and a Questionnaire was started.

Project Title: Creating an Electronic Signout System for UR Well and Analysis of the Signout Information
Description: To improve care at UR Well Student Outreach, a database was created to store information about patients’ visits. One year of data was converted and analyzed, with summary of results presented. Once the database is fully implemented, it can sustainably replace the paper sign-out procedure.
