Description:

Project combating Osteoporosis in women through the organization of weight training sessions and increased education about the disease. A post-project survey was conducted to determine the project’s success.

Project Title: Sports Nutrition Assessment and Information for High School Athletes
Description:

Intervention on the Varsity Boy’s Soccer Team at Spencerport High School to first determine their eating habits and then provide them with pertinent nutritional information regarding their food choices before, during, and after competition.

Project Title: Healthy Habits in School Aged Children
Description:

Students set up teaching sessions with 10 7th grade classes at Wilson Foundation Junior High School. Information included dental hygiene, nutrition and a healthy diet, and the importance of exercise and staying active.

Project Title: A Way to Promote Physical Activity in General Practice
Description:

Construction of a website to promote physical activity and teach persons how to train for a 5K walk/run. Project includes actual gathering of data to develop the website, actual website construction, and distribution of the website address and a brochure to physicians to give to their patients.

Project Title: Improving Urban Adolescent Health Behaviors Through Sports Physicals, Behavior Screening, and Counseling
Description: This project was a continuation of an ongoing volunteer offering of the University of Rochester, targeting students within the Rochester City School District. The intervention includes providing free physicals to high school teens for eligibility in extra curricula activities.

Project Title: Skiing and Helmet Use: An Intervention
Description: The population targeted in this study are skiers at a small community non-profit ski area in Vermont. The study design included researching the data available on helmet use, surveys to gather data, and to implement an intervention involving an informational poster and pamphlet to address the issue.

Description: The project involves increasing publicity for and ensuring the sustainability of a website that helps individuals increase their level of activity by encouraging them to work toward the goal of completing a 5K run/walk.

Project Title: Raising Awareness of Eating Disorders Among Female Athletes and their Coaches
Description: A presentation was developed, with an informational folder, awareness poster and video, to help coaches with spreading awareness and preventing eating disorders. One presentation was given to 17 coaches, one trainer and an Athletic Director.

Project Title: Pediatric Obesity: Promoting Healthy Hearts to Children and Families in Rochester City Elementary Schools
Description: Project based on a need in the inner city community was for instruction and teaching of the parents and families of children at risk of obesity. The aims is to reach out to the children and families to encourage them to make healthy nutrition choices when cooking meals and buying snacks as well as promote active lifestyles for the whole family

Description: A Healthy Heart Booth was created for the open houses at five Rochester City elementary schools. The open houses allowed the medical students to reach both elementary school children and their parents.

Description: The purpose behind creating this program was to address both of the goals of Healthy People 2010, focusing primarily on but not limited to battling overweight and obesity with improvements in nutrition and physical activity.

Project Title: Hoops for Health
Description: The Hoops for Health after school program was created to target those children at greatest risk. With the help of coordinators at Quad A, a partnership was created with students at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and School 34 staff, ultimately leading to the development of the Hoops for Health program in 2003.

Project Title: Food, Fitness & Fun
Description: The aim of this project is to educate children in fourth-sixth grade about diet and exercise and hopefully to have fun while battling pediatric obesity. With the help of a graphic designer in the community, computerized educational modules were created on pediatric obesity that can be implemented into any health class around the country, provided that there are computers available.

Project Title: Improving Children's and Adolescents' Health Through Free Sports Physical Exams
Description: Sustainable partnerships have developed over the years to help successfully perform free physical exams. While the project has received positive feedback, it is now important to evaluate if the program is indeed serving the intended target population.
