Where should you run? You have lots of options in Rochester!!!
- Roads: If you live/work near a lot of busy roads, try to run on ones that have sidewalks or wide shoulders with lots of running room. Otherwise, smaller neighborhoods with lots of connecting
streets tend to have less traffic.
- Track: Most of the time you’ll be running for a set amount of time, but if you want to check distance, the track is a great place to do that! 4 laps = 1 mile. Also, tracks provide a
softer running surface. Most local high schools and colleges have tracks open to the public.
- Parks: Most local parks have a great mix of roads and trails to run on. Less traffic, nice scenery. They can be isolated, so it’s better to run with a partner if you’re headed to a
park. Here is a link to the Monroe County Parks Department.
- Erie Canal Towpath: Some parts are paved, others gravel, and your only traffic involves other runners, bikers, etc. You can gain access from any of the locks. Again, it’s best to run
with someone here.
- Indoor locations: For those of you that don’t like extreme temperatures or bad weather, you have several options. Many local gyms have trial memberships you could try this winter--and local YMCA’s are fairly inexpensive options. Treadmills can seem intimidating if you’ve never tried one, but always start out slowly and very gradually increase your speed. Indoor tracks at colleges are another option, but usually are costlier and have more inconvenient hours. And for indoor walkers, local malls can be a great place to get in that exercise away from the cold!
- Miscellaneous: Here is a link to the Rochester Running Page’s Places to Run--it’s a mix of parks, trails, etc.and also lists out distances
along the Erie Canal Path.
