GOAL:  5K RUN/WALK

Runner’s Knee (Patellofemoral Stress Syndrome)

This is a condition in which the patella (kneecap) rubs against the femur when the knee moves. The cartilage under the kneecap wears away, resulting in pain and inflammation behind the kneecap. The pain is usually worse when walking or running downhill, and the knee may swell at times. Some causes are: overtraining, improper alignment (pronation, being knock-kneed, wide hips), worn shoes, and weak or tight quads, hamstring or ITB.

What to do:

  • Stop running and reduce intensity
  • Ice, elevation, massage, NSAIDs
  • Your doctor may prescribe an intrapatellar strap (placed behind kneecap over over the patellar tendon), neoprene knee sleeve (supports knee and patella), or orthotics.
  • Stretches:
  • Quad, hamstring, and iliotibial band stretches
